The members of OSSC have participated in reef restoration projects funded by the USDA. Most of the growers are planting oysters in areas that are in the same body of water as their farms, at growing sanctuaries designated by the Department of Environmental Management. Oyster larvae attach themselves to empty shells in a lab. The OSSC farmers take these oysters attached to shells back to their farms and raise them until they grow to about an inch in size. At this point, the oysters and shells are ready for planting. Every year, Rob Krause, Jim Arnoux and Nick Papa plant these oysters in piles measuring 10 feet square within established reef sites.

We buy as much local food and beer as possible and focus on remaining a local destination in a very tourist-driven part of town. Our restaurant features 2 bars off-seaon and a 3rd on our covered porch come spring with over 30 draft beer lines combined.

We always sell Matunuck Oysters as our house selection but do rotate in a featured oyster always from New England with many from RI, CT and MA. We love fresh local seafood and in a location like Newport it’s crazy to go too far for your seafood.

The Lobster Bar is located at the end of Bowen’s Wharf in the center of Downtown Newport. We boast the best sunset in town. We have an outdoor deck perfect for a cool lunch or romantic sunset dinner along with an indoor bar and dining room. The Lobster Bar was once Aquidneck Lobster which was a wholesale fish market for seventy years. The space became the Lobster Bar in 2012 and is now used as a restaurant and a venue for private events. The Lobster Bar still has a small wholesale business in the front that customers can pick up the freshest live lobsters, shellfish, and fish. We have an all new, indoor raw bar. We offer Ninigret oysters along with other varieties. The raw bar also has shrimp cocktail, littlenecks, chilled lobster and crab claws.

Matunuck Oyster Bar is committed to uniting fresh, locally grown produce with farm-raised and wild-caught seafood to make the freshest dishes you’ll find anywhere.

The raw bar offers a variety of Rhode Island oysters, crisp cherrystones, littleneck clams, and jumbo shrimp. Matunuck Oysters are grown on Matunuck Oyster Farm in Potter Pond right off the restaurant’s outdoor patio, and organic vegetables are grown at the Matunuck Vegetable Farm on the north end of the pond where Captain John Potter had his vegetable garden in the 1700s. Diners enjoy indoor and outdoor waterside dining seven days a week and the one of a kind heated patio. For those interested in learning more about aquaculture Matunuck offers Oyster Farm tours.
