Rob Krause moved to Rhode Island with plans to start an oyster farm. He took graduate courses in Aquaculture at the University of Rhode Island and worked on Moonstone Oyster Farm with John West of Cedar Island Oyster Farm.
Rob now owns and operates a solar-powered oyster nursery on Ninigret pond which he shares with fellow pond farmers. The nursery raft is originally part of the oldest oyster farm in the states, established in 1977. Once oyster seeds reach 2mm, they are moved to the upweller system to accelerate their growth. Solar panels on the raft’s south-facing side harness energy to power pumps which push pond water through troughs in the raft’s upweller system where very young oysters are held.
